You can find anything on the Internet, but not everything you are looking for is on the Internet.
The Internet is an exceptionally powerful medium and it has undoubtedly facilitated our lives in so many ways. Online search is easily accessible, provides real-time updates, and is also interactive. There are, however, a few downfalls: how many times have we found ourselves browsing a sea of results yet unable to identify the most relevant information? Lack of reliable quality control, overflow of news (often referred to as information overload) and volatility are the main concerns of information that often circulates on the web. Remember that information is only credible if it is authoritative and reliable!
A library, in this sense, is no longer just an information repository but first and foremost a place of learning where information skills can be developed. Browsing these spaces, guided by the expertise of its dedicated staff, will allow you to develop your awareness and critical capacity.
For this reason, IED Libraries organise training meetings (basic) aimed at providing information on their spaces, services and research tools. We show you how to access online catalogues, how to access electronic resources even at home, how to browse the shelves, how to carry out quality research on multiple sources, and give you the tools you need to write a bibliography correctly.
To access the IED Milano library services, schedule an appointment on Picktime on the available days and slots. For the Rome branches, however, contact us at biblio@roma.ied.it.
You can choose from the following information pathways or decide to follow them all:
- guide to library services and tools; space tutorials;
- use of digital resources: specialist databases and ebooks;
- MLOL (our main ebook platform) and digital lending.
The information literacy pathways can be divided into face-to-face or online meetings with librarians or the digital service providers themselves.
